cemetery avenue signs

A slightly different restoration project that started some years ago is the replacement  and repairing of avenue signs throughout the cemetery. These have been designed by our member David Cowley (shown below), based on an old sign he discovered within the grounds.

Each replica is constructed, painted and lettered by David, with the Society bearing the cost of the materials. Each signpost is supported on a single wooden post and stands about 2 feet tall.

The first six signs were erected in October 1999, starting appropriately enough with St David's Avenue. With over 60 named avenues within the cemetery, this project will take some years to complete. David also maintains existing signs that become damaged or discoloured.
