Lt-General Sir Henry Goldfinch (c1781-1854)

Sir Henry Goldfinch was a Royal Engineer who served with distinction during the Peninsular War (1808-13) and his battle honours are recorded on the headstone. Goldfinch died in London on 21 November 1854, and was buried here on 25 November, just two weeks after Brookwood Cemetery opened. This is the oldest surviving memorial anywhere within the cemetery, and it was tidied up and planted by volunteers from the Brookwood Cemetery Society in 1998. Goldfinch is buried in plot 27.
