  • Restoration work completed on the Lake, Glades of Remembrance
    • We are delighted to report that the restored Lake and the Glades of Remembrance were officially re-opened by the Mayor of Woking on Sunday 15 November. After a short speech in which she referred to the important restoration work undertaken by Erkin Guney (Managing Director of Brookwood Cemetery), she unveiled the memorial to Ramadan Guney, owner of the cemetery from 1985-2006. The Lake was then blessed with holy water and incense by Fr Alexis of the St Edward Brotherhood. Carp, sourced by Iain Welters, were then released into the lake by the children present. The restoration work was partly undertaken by staff from the Welters Organisation Worldwide who used special materials to seal the lake's concrete lining. Photographs of the ceremony have been posted on the Brookwood Cemetery website. A short history of the Glades, written by Dr Brian Parsons, appeared in our Spring 2008 issue of Necropolis News. [December 2009]

    • Brookwood Cemetery is now in the top 10% of historic parks and gardens in the UK after English Heritage upgraded it to Grade I status. English Heritage wrote to the cemetery earlier this month to tell them the good news, stating the upgrade had taken place due to the "extraordinary scheme on an entirely different scale to other cemeteries".
    • English Heritage praised the quality, design and layout of the grounds, its strong international links, and wide diversity of social and religious aspects.
    • Erkin Guney, Managing Director of Brookwood Cemetery, was delighted with the news, saying "It reinforces what we have been saying for some time, that Brookwood Cemetery deserves to be recognised as a site of national and international importance." Brookwood Cemetery's press release can be read here. [June 2009]
