The Brookwood Cemetery Society is a purely voluntary organisation and is entirely dependent on income generated by our own membership and activities.

Our income is therefore limited, but this has not stopped us from raising money to restore several important memorials in the cemetery.

Sometimes this has been achieved through partnership projects with other interested groups. Some examples are described in these pages, which concentrates on restored monuments.

  • Rev William Robert  Fountaine Addison VC
    • The restoration of this memorial followed on from the work on the grave of Ross Lowis Mangles VC (see below). Restoration of both memorials was undertaken by Pankhurst Graphic Masonry.
  • The Columbarium
    • The Society successfully raised money to fund emergency repairs to the roof of this attractive Grade II listed mausoleum in plot 26. A £2,000 grant was paid to us by the Surrey Historic Buildings Trust on the completion of the work.
  • William & Evelyn De Morgan
    • William De Morgan was a famous artist, potter and novelist; his wife was a noted pre-Raphaelite artist. Their memorial was restored by funding from the De Morgan Foundation.
  • Drake family mausoleum
    • The Society agreed to fund the emergency repairs to the roof of this attractive Grade II listed mausoleum in plot 31. The Society obtained a £600 grant from Woking Borough Council and a £2,000 grant from the Surrey Historic Buildings Trust.
  • Dugald Drummond
    • Drummond was a locomotive designer who latterly worked for the London & South Western Railway. His memorial was restored by Co-Operative Funeral Services.
  • Elaine Falkiner
    • The Brookwood Cemetery Society paid for the repair and restoration of this vandalised statue.
  • Lt. General Sir Henry Goldfinch KCB
    • The earliest private grave in the cemetery was cleaned and tidied by volunteers from The Brookwood Cemetery Society.
  • Horatia Nelson Johnson
    • The restoration of this headstone - commemorating one of Nelson's grand-daughters - was undertaken by Pankhurst Graphic Masonry. The restoration work was timed to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.
  • Ross Lowis Mangles VC
    • The restoration of this memorial was timed to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the inauguration of the Victoria Cross. Restoration of the stonework was undertaken by Pankhurst Graphic Masonry.
  • John Thomas Ibbotson Tiller
    • The restoration of this memorial was shared between George Barker (the son of John Tiller's youngest daughter Jessie), Mary Atthey (grand-daughter), Bernard Tiller (great-grandson) and ex-Tiller girl Avril Owton. The Brookwood Cemetery Society also donated £800 towards the cost. The restoration of the stonework was undertaken by Tudor Rose Memorials.
  • Jane Elizabeth ("Jeanie") Senior
    • The restoration of this memorial was brought to our attention by Graham Senior Milne who has assisted Sybil Oldfield with her biography of his great-great grandmother. Restoration of the lettering and stonework was undertaken by Pankhurst Graphic Masonry.
