Background to the Submission
Subsequent to the publication of our new introductory guide
to the cemetery, the Planning Office at Woking Borough Council submitted a formal request to the Department of Culture, Media & Sport to have "certain memorials statutorily listed ... because of their architectural and historic importance. Having them listed will assist in their protection and help attract funding for repair works to safeguard their future." At that time the only listed structure in Brookwood Cemetery was the chapel, flagstaff and entrance to the American Military section.

The original list of 20 memorials and plots recommended for listing were as follows: Elaine Falkiner (plot 2), Dr G. W. Leitner (plot 2), Sir E. W. Moir (plot 4), G. Salviati (plot 25), Lord Edward Pelham-Clinton (plot 4), Henri van Laun (plot 80), Arthur Hacker (plot 27), Bent family memorial (plot 34), Sir Luke Fildes (plot 36), Freshfield family memorial (plot 44), John S. Sargent (the Ring), Drake family mausoleum (plot 31), Vickers family memorial (plot 31), the Columbarium (plot 26), the De Morgan memorial (plot 24), Dr Robert Knox (plot 100), Alfred Bestall (plot 100), the Nicols family mausoleum (plot 131), the Brookwood Memorial (military section), and the Parsee ground.
