Restoration of the memorial to John Thomas Ibbotson Tiller |
Memorial to John Thomas Ibbotson Tiller, restored by Tudor Rose Memorials in 2007 John Tiller (1854-1925) was the founder of the famous "Tiller Girls". This restoration project was a joint one with other interested parties. Mr George Barker brought the poor condition of the memorial to the attention of the Society and was seeking assistance in raising the money to pay for its restoration. Mr Barker is the son of John Tiller's youngest daughter Jessie and is the principal viola, secretary, and web manager of the orchestra of the Bournemouth Philharmonic Society. The cost of the restoration by Tudor Rose Memorials was quoted at £2,000, and the Brookwood Cemetery Society donated £800 towards this. Other contributors are Mary Atthey (grand-daughter), Bernard Tiller (great-grandson) and Avril Owton (an ex-Tiller Girl). The results of the restoration are best judged from the photographs. Tudor Rose Memorials may be contacted at their Head Office, Armstrong Road, Manor Trading Estate, Benfleet, Essex SS7 4PW, or telephone 01268 882500. Photographs © George Barker and John Clarke |
